Each week students will be engaged in word study. Word Study “is a developmental, student-centered approach to teaching phonics, spelling, and vocabulary, that is integrated with reading and writing instruction” (Picard, Meadows, Invernizzi, Johnston & Bear, 2018, p. 3). There will be a Spell Check each Thursday, but the goal of word study extends beyond the retention of specific words by teaching students to transfer those spellings to other words that share similar pronunciations or meanings.
Below you will find the word lists that we will be focusing on this school year. The Spell Check will include 10 of the words that we focused on throughout the week.
